How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take? Realistic Timelines

The first question every homeowner asks about a kitchen remodel — after "how much?" — is "how long?" And the honest answer is: longer than the contractor's initial estimate suggests, unless the scope is clearly defined and the materials are ordered before demolition begins.

Phase 1: Planning and Design (2–6 Weeks)

This is the phase most homeowners want to skip — and it's the one that determines whether the project runs smoothly or becomes a rolling series of mid-construction decisions.

Planning includes the initial site visit and measurement, layout discussions, material selection (cabinets, countertops, flooring, fixtures, hardware), and finalizing the scope and budget. For a cosmetic refresh, planning takes 1 to 2 weeks. For a full gut renovation, expect 4 to 6 weeks.

The key to a shorter planning phase: make material decisions before demolition, not during it. Waiting to pick countertops until the cabinets are installed doesn't save time — it adds 2 to 4 weeks of idle waiting while the fabricator templates, cuts, and schedules installation.

Phase 2: Permitting (1–4 Weeks)

Any kitchen project involving plumbing, electrical, or structural work requires a permit in most Illinois municipalities. Culture Construction handles all permitting, but the timeline depends on the municipality.

Some DuPage County towns issue permits in 5 to 7 business days. Others — particularly for projects involving structural modifications — take 3 to 4 weeks including plan review. Cook County municipalities vary even more widely.

We submit permits as early as possible in the process, overlapping with the planning phase when we can. But permit timing is outside our control, and it's the most common source of unexpected delays.

Phase 3: Material Lead Times (4–12 Weeks)

Cabinets are the long pole. Stock cabinets are available in 2 to 3 weeks. Semi-custom cabinets take 4 to 8 weeks. Custom cabinets take 8 to 14 weeks. This lead time runs in parallel with planning and permitting — we order cabinets as soon as the layout is finalized, not after the permit is issued.

Countertops require the cabinets to be installed before final templating, so there's an inherent sequential dependency. From template to installation takes 2 to 3 weeks for most fabricators in the Chicago area.

Appliances are currently shipping on normal timelines (1 to 3 weeks for most brands). The pandemic-era 6-month waits are over, though specific models from European brands occasionally have longer lead times.

Phase 4: Demolition (2–5 Days)

Demolition is the fastest phase and the one homeowners dread. For a cosmetic refresh, demo is minimal — removing old countertops and backsplash. For a full gut, the kitchen is stripped to the studs in 2 to 3 days.

During demolition we often discover conditions that affect the scope: outdated electrical (aluminum wiring, undersized panels), galvanized plumbing, water damage behind cabinets, or subfloor problems. A good estimate includes contingency for these discoveries.

Phase 5: Rough-In (1–2 Weeks)

Rough-in is the structural and mechanical work: plumbing moves, electrical rewiring, structural modifications (wall removals, headers, beams), HVAC adjustments, and framing. Each trade works in sequence, and municipal inspections are required before closing the walls.

This phase is where coordination matters most. A well-managed project schedules the plumber, electrician, and HVAC technician in sequence with no gaps between them. A poorly managed one has the homeowner waiting a week between each trade because nobody coordinated the schedule.

Phase 6: Finishes (2–6 Weeks)

This is the build phase: cabinet installation, countertop installation, flooring, backsplash, painting, trim, hardware, and fixture installation. It's the phase where the kitchen takes shape and the homeowner starts to see the result.

The timeline depends on complexity. A cabinet-and-countertop refresh with no tile takes 2 to 3 weeks. A full gut with custom tile backsplash, new flooring, and crown molding takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Total Timelines

Adding the phases together, here are realistic total timelines from your first meeting with us to the day we hand you back your kitchen:

Cosmetic refresh: 4 to 8 weeks total (1–2 weeks planning, minimal permitting, 2–3 weeks lead time, 2–3 weeks construction).

Mid-range remodel: 10 to 16 weeks total (3–4 weeks planning/permitting, 4–8 weeks cabinet lead time running in parallel, 3–5 weeks construction).

Full gut renovation: 16 to 24 weeks total (4–6 weeks planning/permitting, 8–12 weeks cabinet lead time in parallel, 5–8 weeks construction).

It's not permits, not materials, and not the contractor's schedule. The #1 cause of kitchen remodel delays is mid-project scope changes — the homeowner deciding to change the layout, switch cabinet styles, or add a feature after construction has started.

Every scope change triggers a cascade: new materials to order, new lead times, potential permit amendments, and rework on anything already installed that conflicts with the change. A single scope change in the middle of construction can add 3 to 6 weeks.
